Tutorial: How I do my eyebrows

Hey guys. So todays post is a little different. you might notice from time to time, I do "How to posts" or "Tips n Tricks" posts. These are in response to emails, comments or tweets often asking the same question. I have always been reluctant to do a post on my eyebrows, which is a question I do get asked alot, mainly because I hate them. They are so big and dominate my face, but I do always get complimented on them so I must be doing something right. Having said that, I've also had remarks that my eyebrows are... well, lets just say not everyone is a fan, so if you are one of those people, i'd skip this post!

But anyways, today I am gonna go through how I do my brows and for this, I had to leave my brows to grow naturally over a month. Let me tell you, I hated it, my eyebrows grow incredibly quickly so I was going out of my mind! But it was the best way to show you!

Tools:

Veet Wax Strips for facial hair - Yes I do wax my brows when they get too untamely. It just seems easier and a lot quicker for me. Plus its practically painless but that may be because I am used to it
Make Up Wipes - I use these for getting the wax off my skin and the coldness of the wipe helps redness.
Scissors - To cut the wax strips into smaller strips.
Tweezers - My preferred ones are the Tweezermans. I love these, they are the least painless and always grip the hairs (as opposed to half gripping them and causing a whole load of pain)

And then for filling in:

Cosmopolition Eyebrow palette* - This was recently gifted to me by the lovely ladies over at Baobella when I went to meet them and their gorgeous faces in London! It was neat timing too, as that day I had ran out of my MAC Lingering eyebrow pencil and vowed never to buy it again as it runs out too fast and costs too much.
Too Faced Detailer Brush - This is actually a small eyeshadow detailer brush, but I use it to fill in! It creates a nicer more natural look than typical eyebrow pencils I find!

Waxing
So I know a lot of people get their eyebrows professionally waxed or threaded or just stick to plain old plucking, but for me, I can't afford to get my brows waxed and threaded at the rate they grow. Most days, as part of my everyday make up routine I will tweeze to keep my eyebrows under control, but some weeks I go without make up or simply get to busy to keep up the routine and find waxing is the quickest and easiest method if I have a lot of hairs to get rid of at one time. I would obviously only tweeze if I had one or two hairs, i'm talking about when I have a eyebrow, pretty overgrown like the one below!

So here's my little walkthrough on how I do my eyebrows! Hope you find it helpful!

Oh goodness, shield yer eyes! Here is my completely natural overgrown brow. Lets sort it out!
I use the scissors to cut the wax strips into strips of differing thickness. Some are really thin, some are thick. I just find this easiest to get bigger, fuller areas of my brow and the really skinny bits.

Ridiculous picture alert. I then apply the stripes like so. It looks a bit silly, but I promise, one little whip of the wax strip and all the hairs are gone, much quicker than plucking! Be very careful when applying the strips as you obviously don't want to rip off your whole eyebrow! I usually focus one strip above my brow, one or two thicker strips below and one skinnier strip where my brow begins.
And here you see the eyebrow after the wax strips. Still a few loose stubborn ones that I will then go in and tweeze off. They usually tweeze out really really easily afterwards. As you can see the area is a little red and swollen. This calms down after about an hour and can be very easily concealed! I often do this process just before going out and it looks fine!
Then take your eyebrow kit of choice! I have used many many things for my eyebrows. I used MAC Lingering eyebrow pencil for a long long time, but found it just ran out too quickly to justify repurchasing. I also used MAC eyeshadows, which I have no problem with but I really love this little Cosmo kit. I use the darkest shade for my brows as the middle shade is a bit too red. I then set in place with a slick of the wax.

And here it the eyebrow completely filled in. Voila!
Before and After! Even though the lighting slightly changed, you get the idea!
And there you have it! How I do my eyebrows and what I use to fill them in! Its pretty easy and has become my go-to way to do them. Even if people don't particularly like my eyebrows (believe me I'm with ya there!) I've learnt to work with what I got and its better than seeing them as the first picture eh?

I'd love to know what you use to do your eyebrows and how you keep them tame!

  1. Wow your eyebrows look so good! I'd be too scared to wax my own brows! I'm really lazy with my eyebrows but I just tweeze them when they get too unruly haha. xx

    1. I usually do tweeze every morning, but I do find waxing easiest when they get REALLY unruly haha! It just gets all the hairs off in one go but it is scary the very first time you do it, you have to be suuuuper careful!

  2. I'm one of those people that goes to get theirs done, haha. You did an incredible job- I don't think I could have managed it aside from the plucking of one stray hair! I'm not that bothered (re: very lazy) with my bushy brows. You've got really nice eyebrows even with the few stray hairs in the before picture :)

    1. Ahh you must be kidding? Haha I think my eyebrow was an absolute mess in the before picture! Lucky I have a fringe to cover it haha! I wish I could get mine done professionally every time but it would be too costly at the rate they grow :(

    1. No problem Jen! I actually found growing my brows out for a month really helped my more sparse bits (I say sparse but honestly, my brows are so thick!) I'm a lot lot happier with them now after growing them out than I was before :)

  8. I've just stopped (about a month ago) getting them waxed by my beautician because i felt she was waxing them a bit too thin so have been plucking the odd few but have got my kit assembled ready to neaten them up properly this week - wax, tweezers, eyebrow comb an scissors to get rid of the proper long stragley ones lol i always think people look so much more put together with neat brows :-) I LOVE yours! I have wonky brows due to a few chickepox scars under the arch of one but mainly due to the fact that one side of my face sits a lot higher than the other - no eyebrow arch of smile dimples on one side :-(
