Kat Von D Poetica Palette Review & Swatches

Hey everyone! So today I am reviewing a brand I had never tried previously but always wanted to. It has always been one of those brands you can only get in the US, but Roses Beauty Store stocks it, along with lots of other US only brands! When the store owner, Lyndsey kindly offered to send me one to try out, I was over the moon! Being on a spending ban I'm having to restrict myself from buying pretty much her whole store so this was a lovely little treat, thanks Lyndsey :)

So on with the review!

The packaging is pretty basic, I have no problems with it but I wouldn't travel with it as I do think its easily breakable if dropped. The palette opens and reveals a huge mirror inside and it has a very "Sleek" feel to it. I really liked looking into the inspiration behind this palette. Kat Von D actually designed the palette with imagery inspired by old world romance with a tattoo-esque edge. I can definitely see it! Inside is a lovely selection of romantic purples and edgy colours. What we really wanna know is how does it perform?

The eyeshadows are soft, buttery and easy to use. The formula actually contains rose extract with the aim of hydrating the lid. This has created a very soft, blendable and buildable eyeshadow creating opaque and pigmented colour on the lid. The pigmentation on some of the colours is just WOW. I was blown away and liked the variety of neutrals and purples. Purple is one colour I can never resist when it comes to eyeshadows and I was so pleased to see a nice variety in this palette. But anyways, onto the swatches!

Read on for an individual breakdown :)

Forgiveness (Pearlized butter cream) - I love this shade for highlighting. It has a slight frostiness to it which makes it really eye catching as a brow/inner corner highlight. Its relatively sheer but I always appreciate colours like this as they add diversity to a palette. I really get put off when you can't create a whole look with a palette so brow highlight is a plus in my books. Its soft and pigmented but has a slightly grittier texture than the others.

Sand Timer (pearlized sand) - I really love this colour. It is just PERFECT for putting all over the lid in a hurry and looking like you have actually spent time on your make up. Its definitely a creamy sand sort of colour and just looks lovely all over the lid. Definitely going to get a lot of use out of this!

Chandler (Pearlized Copper) - Now this shade REALLY stands out. Its super pigmented and buttery and just SO eye catching. I really liked putting this all over the lid and warming it up with a brown in the crease or adding it as a pop of colour under the lash line. Its a very "summer" sort of colour that would look lovely with a tan.

Tijuana (brown and black with sparkle) - This shade is really nice and adds edginess and diversity to the palette as its perfect for creating a smokey eye. Pair it with any of the purples or Chandler and done! Its buttery and easy to blend which sometimes I find is hard with black eyeshadows and nicely pigmented. I LOVE the coppery sparkle, it makes it a really unique shade.

Wonderland (burgundy with gold pearl) - This shade immediately caught my eye. Both this and Tijuana have sparkles in which make my inner magpie instantly drawn to them. This is a lovely deep purple with red/gold sparkles. It looks lovely in the crease, creates a lovely purple smokey eye and is easy to work with.

Skiba (purple with gold pearl) - As a lover of purples, I squealed a little bit seeing the lovely selection in this palette. I really liked this shade. Its not deep enough to be a crease colour but is lovely to throw in the lid and blend out, creating a lovely look for spring! It has these lovely gold flecks in it which actually translate to the lid. Again pigmented and buttery.

Babe (lavender) - This shade, oh my, how gorgeous? It has this duochrome sort of finish that makes it both purple and blue - absolutely stunning! I was sort of disappointed as it is the sheerest shade of the bunch, if it was more pigmented it would be purple perfection. But it is soft, feminine and easy to build up. I think i'll be rocking this look a lot for spring!
You Alone (satin vanilla)
I did feel the addition of another highlight shade was a bit of a let down. While this one is less gritty and more matte and highlight approriate than Forgiveness, I would have liked to have seen another shade in its place. Regardless it is a nice colour, it doesn't pack much punch on the lid, but as a highlight its beautiful!
The palette also comes with one of the famous Kat Von D eyeliner pencils in Puro Amor (a very very rich black). I can honestly say these easily live upto the hype. Puro Amor is creamy, richly pigmented and doesn't pull or tug on the lashline/waterline. It was a real joy to use. I do find it very compariable to MAC's feline eyeliner, in terms of creaminess. That being said, it does have a tendency to move around, but I didn't really find that too much of a problem considering I had it on both my waterline and lashline.

So there you have it! I overall really like this palette. I do wanna say the formulation is just superb. The eyeshadows are so buttery and just melt on the lid. The pigmentation is nice, easy to build up and the shade range is complimentary. Its  easy to create a smokey eye in one place which is a bonus. The formula is paraben free, again huge bonus and contains ingredients which are kind to the eyelid (perfect if you suffer from dry lids!) I'm impressed and when I'm free to spend again, I think I will be investing in a few more of the Kat Von D palettes.

If you are a US lovely, Sephora stocks the Poetica palette here for $36.00 working out at around $4.50 each per eyeshadow AND you get a free eyeliner too! In the UK? Fear not! Roses Beauty Store is stocking this along with lots of other Sephora/US make up goodness. You can get it here for £36.00.

What do you think? Have you tried Kat Von D before?

This review does include a sample sent for consideration. Regardless of this, my reviews are always honest and dedicated to my readers.
